Default G22 no low end power

Greetings! I just got my first gas cart, an 03 g22. It seemed fine driving around my property that is level, but once I took it up to my camp that has some decent hills, the issues became obvious. Without a big running start, it cannot make it up a hill, and if I stop, then I cannot start again. It doesn't bog out, it just doesn't move. It will hit decent speed on flats but still does take a while to get there.

I am reasonably mechanically inclined, but have never worked on the clutch/trans system on a golf cart, but it feels like it just isn't going into lower gears. I brought it home from camp and am hoping to get it fixed to have it back up for the kids next weekend. Any ideas from those much more experienced than I? Any help is greatly appreciated!

I would start with blocking up the rear end and looking at the the clutches operating make sure the belt is coming up to the top of the primary sheave and sucking down to the bottom of the secondary clutch at wide open throttle might just need a good cleaning and lubed up on both clutches

Thanks I will do that. Are there any resources out there that go thru this process for a first timer? Give me an Allison 1000 or TH400 and I am fine but I am embarrassingly ignorant about this. ( but eager to learn)

Your best bet would be to buy a service manual tells you everything you need to know about the cart

Daub, just read this site, you will get up to speed in one nite!!

To start, grease the two zirks, one on each clutch!! No more than 2 pumps in each!!

If I had to bet, the primary clutch rollers are completely worn out and have flat spots. This prevents the clutch from downshifting to climb. You can remove the cover on the primary clutch easily, and take a look at the rollers to see if they're worn. It's also possible the sheaves on either the primary or secondary clutch have worn to the point that the "gearing" is nonexistent. Finally, a loose belt can cause what you're describing, too.

As countless people on this site will tell you, Don Plowman of Plowman's Carts in Flint, MI is THE GUY when it comes to Yamaha clutches. If you need to have your clutch rebuilt or to purchase a new one, he's the guy you want to work with. The $500 I spent on my G16 to rebuild the primary clutch, upgrade the secondary clutch, and rejet the carb made the cart a beast beyond belief.

well let's hope it is not anything to that extent. $500 is certainly not in the budget for a clutch right now and while I am a guy who loves power and have a 496 ci Big Block for my daily driver, I don't need big power for just hauling the family around the campground..... yet.

Maybe not today, but someday you will!!

Start with a complete maint program, read all you can, and do all the maint on the car!! Make it run as perfect as you can!! Then you can think about performance items!! (Like your 496 RAT !!)
