Default yamaha g16 knocking/poping

hello i have a yamaha G16 that i bought from someone and when i bought it i knew it had some problem. it was mixing oil and gas real bad and had the horrible poping noice or knocking noice. i have rebuilt the egine and made sure the valves or at .004 on the exhaust stroke. and the exact same noise still is there. this noise is only there when the cart is running. if it is just turning over and over with no power its not there. could this be an exhaust leak or maybe a intake leak im about to pull my hair out trying to figure it out.

You set both valves at 4 or .008 at top dead center (on the intake stroke)!!

Gas in oil sounds like carburetor issue.what did your rebuild consist of?

Sorry for the delay, I basically did everything, piston, rings bearing value all new gaskets and a new carburetor. I reset the valves to what you said Mike Mac and still the same problem. Now after listening to it more closely it sounded like it was coming from inside the muffler. I put my hand over the end when it was running causeing more back pressure and the noise stopped. When I removed my hands it would start back. I ended up putting a peice of pipe in the end with it crimped on one end (not all the way) and it sounds like a brand new cart. Obviously I can't leave it like this so do yall think it's the muffler or still in the valves. This is all new to me.

There have been stories about parts coming loose inside the muffler on those models. I haven't paid much attention to them. I don't know if there is a fix for that or not, you may have to replace the muffler!!

There is also a bracket welded to the starter/generator support that is just tack welded in place. It supports the rear side of the air cleaner box. That bracket breaks the weld where it is welded to the starter bracket. It makes a bad racket when running as well!!

Sounds like a carburetor issue. Did you put on an aftermarket or OEM carburetor?

I'll check the bracket out also, the carb is OEM. You think the carb would have something to do with the noise? I know it had something to do with the gas mixing in oil.
