Goat,

Guess you heard about the pins that keeps the rings from rotating. I also recall something about not rotating the piston once it is in pushed into the cylinder as this will also cause the rings to break. Fussy work, eh?

Good luck, Marty

The rings are directional they can be are installed upwards or downwards. They have a slight curve profile on the ring so that in the upward compression stroke, the rings theoreticly push out against the cylinder walls to create more compression/better seal.
You can think of it like an automatic door stop wedge that moves out when the pistion goes up. lol

Yesterday i was looking around for my pg3 rebuild book, i seem to have missplaced it, but i do remember it saying to put the rings in a certian way, and i think its the way that DEWDIGGLER said. I just cant verify it, it also has nice pics in the book as well.

I understand this, I have rebuilt a few engines before....but when you mount the rings upside down (with the inside taper down) I don't understand how they can work. ya know I know what he said is wrong, I was just trying to find out if he meant something other than what he said.

IM SORRY ALL, SCRATCH THE LAST REPLY.
IF THE RINGS ARE UPPERSIDE KEYSTONE THEN THE BEVEL IS TO THE TOP.
And if they are set between the locating pins
and plenty of lube it should slide together no problem

my bad, Dew

No biggie Dew, I figured you had just mis-spoke and would correct it when you checked back in. didn't want to make it an issue or a class in piston rings 101 or i'd never had said something.

The arrow on the piston goes toward the exhaust. The ends of the rings should not cross over a port. That will catch. The ring end gap needs to be checked in the top of the cylinder. The L or bevel goes up as printed L. The pins are usually offset to the top of the ringslot. Round off the cylinder ports so as not to catch the ring. Clean the ringslot and precheck for full compression, The inner bottom of the cylinder should be beveled for ring installation. (by the factory) Use 2 people and oil for lubrication.( sounds strange?) Place the ring(S) on the piston, check ring compression and install 1 ring at a time. Use a lot of light and be sure the first one has cleared before you start the second ring. use three hands to hold the rings compessed while you slide the cylinder over the piston. Don't twist the cylinder and keep it aligned while installing pistons and rings. Good LUCK.

Did I miss anything?
