WinXP is all we can use to even program the crap used in Fairplays anymore. We keep one old Pentium 4 going off line just for that. Only works in 16 colors due to video card failure but it will program the 1st gen Fairplay.

XP SP3 in a VM on Win 10 is a better solution. For advanced software, you may have trouble with graphics drivers for XP.

Alltrax TOOLKIT is an essential diagnostic tool. The best to come along ever.
So yeah it might be needed down the road... like when a speed sensor or throttle goes awry

Yurtle, XP in a VM doesn't seem to talk to the module plugged into a USB port for some reason. I tried that on my W10 laptop, and it just kept waiting for a connection. Like the virtualized hardware couldn't directly talk to real hardware. Likewise, an external Wifi card won't be recognized either.

Did you install an XP driver for the USB cord you're using? Prolly also need a driver for the external WiFi card as well?

I just gave my neighbor my old telescope, and he was able to control it from a VM XP SP3 and a USB to DB9 cable, after loading the driver for the cable. Wifi just used his built in WiFi connection, though he likes to keep it off most of the time.

We forget how often we used to have to install drivers, even after plug and pray started to work fairly reliably.

Fairplay software just uses the software to connect to the standard USB port driver that is usually bundled with windows. Windows XP has built-in drivers to interface with USB ports.

The issue with VMs is that Fairplay's software was not playing nice with the virtualized port. it kept looking for the connection to the virtual port not the actual port. just sat there connecting... indefinitely. eventually times out after 50 passes.

It works fine on XP, but we keep that machine offline. seems to work. Fairplays are rare, especially pre-Curtis variants. They only made them one or two years.

Other VM issues are getting video/sound to work. Should work like with the wifi does but often you have to find unsupported ways to make things work. I got a VM on Linux at home running Windows 95 (hey, i prefer it to Windows 10 anyway! And i like Packard Bell Navigator) and boy, getting sound and video to work without the VM extension driver (that doesn't support W9x) is a pain! Thankfully i know where old 90s sites that are still online are by heart.

Personally, in my golf car case, i blame Fairplay's software more than the VM actually failing me.

I was thinking you needed a USB to serial cable. Better baby that XP machine.

My controller placement is extremely tight. I permanently installed the USB cable. Also relocated my run tow switch.
