Thanks yurtle for the tip on cartsunlimited.net. I read up on breaking in new batteries and I might have been a bit premature with my assessment. They say that it may take 10-20 charges to get the batteries up to peak performance.
Cobra1, the batteries are the same specs in that they are 6v, deep cycle, 225AH. The only difference is that they are tubular plates.
I've load tested the pack and compared to static charge. I also tested each battery separately and recorded the data. It will be interesting to compare the numbers after a few more runs and recharges.
Test results showed that the battery pack had a static voltage of 38.1v. Each battery was between 6.2v and 6.3v
Under load up a steep, consistent grade road, the pack dropped to 31.8v. The six batteries were under load 5.68v, 5.24v, 5.60v, 5.15v, 5.25v, and 5.16v

Mooncarter, I don't have a photo at the moment, but they look indentical, even the colour, as the Trojans. Just a different label on them.

Four of those are dropping way to low. I think you have a crap set of batteries.

Never heard the term “tubeular plates” anyone know what that means aside from an advertising phrase ?

Just wondering if they are some sort of knock off coming out of China. Through Indonesia maybe, then Down Under.

Tubular battery is a type of lead acid battery in which the positive electrode is not a grid, but a comb like lead skeleton that holds the positive material with the help of tubular bags. The structure looks like a series of tubes kept side by side along the length of the electrode, hence the name “tubular”.

Brand new batteries even before being fully broken in should not be draining in 10 min, I wouldn't put too much faith in that as the solution.

So apparently the Battery rep is going to give me a call on Monday. Be interesting to see what he has to say. Will post his comments after I hear from him.
