Sketchy Steering
I was hoping that someone can point me in the right direction to help me solve my steering issue. Ive got a 95, Lifted cart with 23" tires and Now that i've upgraded the motor(speed) the driving characteristics are pretty scary. it seems that at speed the cart feels like its drifting to the right with out the steering wheel moving, i can correct it, but its a little sketchy. My cart has that old school steering box and tie-rods connected by a strip of steel.. I don't know if this means that the steering box is really sloppy or i'm just going to fast for the design of the steering -suspension system
thanks |

Re: Sketchy Steering
My 95 was the same way after a lift kit install. I replaced the steering box. Handles perfect now. Money well spent. Easy to replace.

Re: Sketchy Steering
I think you can rebuild the steering boxes. Do a search on this forum for that. Somebody else has done this.
But the first thing you may want to do is have someone turn the steering left 'n right and see if the play is in the box, or if it's where your tie-rod ends hook onto the box link. If you have play in the tie-rod ends, or where the tie-rod bolts to the steering, that could be where your issue is. Could be worn bolts, or perhaps a tie-rod end needs replaced. I was having some issues and determined it was the tie-rod ends. I fixed that and all is now good!! |

Re: Sketchy Steering
Most of them I've seen with that steering system the problem is the big brass bushing that vertical arm swings on. Something like $30 or less if you can do it yourself.

Re: Sketchy Steering
Thanks for the replies.
box looks pretty tired, boot is ripped, grease is all over the place and the steering wheel moves a little w/o moving the wheels. ended up getting a new assembly for $160 shipped.. |
