1991 Club Car Gas

Good morning gents, I have the above mentioned cart. It’s in very good condition so I don’t see the need to buy a new one. It currently runs fine but smokes a little at start or choked. I want to start collecting the needed parts for an engine swap. I don’t need it to fly as my kids drive it a good bit but around 25mph loaded would be cool. What engine/kit would you recommend?

If I push it can get 22mph out of my 1987 Club Car DS Gas (same motor, KF82 flathead). But that's only with me on it. If you do go with another motor, I may buy some parts from your stock motor so let me know! I can't get more than 17 out of one without the engine self destructing (same flathead). Must be different rear end ratios. Older flathead cars and early Kawasaki FE290s seem to have 'granny low' rears, and rev up super high to even achieve 15 MPH. They're usually factory set to 10-12 MPH.

I agree that the above is likely true for a stock-height cart running the stock 18” tires...the motor would not handle it. My cart is lifted 6” with 22.5” tires. The greater circumference of my tires allows for a higher top speed (while I lose a little low end torque). I don’t run the cart at 22mph hardly ever, only that I pushed it once on a flat, straight, paved road and briefly hit 22mph according to my gps. I regularly drive 16-18mph with no issue though.

Hmm I picked up a 1991 carryall 2 with a KF82, maybe they had a different ratio? I havent driven it yet, just got it running last night and need to get the decade old gas out of the tank, but theres a label on it that says its factory set to 15mph and adjustment to increase that could lead to injury or death (or something to that effect).

I’m assuming my 1991 cc has the KF82? What would you guys do if you were replacing the engine? Go back stock or engine swap?

I’m happy with the stock motor for my purposes. And I have so many parts laying around I would just fix it. Yes the KF82/341cc flathead motor was the stock gas motor in all the gas Club Cars from 1984-1991.

It's also a lot cheaper to rebuild than swap.

I have and have had carts that do 25+mph. It's kinda fun for a very short time but after a week, I rarely go more than around 20mph, but I'd say 90% of my driving is probably in the 15mph range. Once you get up to higher speeds things start getting squirrely, brakes arent real effective, steering is sketchy, etc. For me, the only real benefit of having the ABILITY to go that fast is that when you're cruising comfortably at around 18mph, the engine is just putting along happy.

But that's just my opinion anyway.
