1998 Electric Club Car charge meter
I have replaced all the batteries (Trojan) in my new to me 1998 Club Car. When I brought my old batteries back for core rebate I noticed they were bulged out. The battery guy said that was caused by overcharging. I plugged the charger in and after several minutes the analog charge meter was in the red and the charger ammeter indicated 10 Amp charge rate. Is this normal or should I have the charger checked?

Re: 1998 Electric Club Car charge meter
Is charge meter needle in the red when charging normal or does red indicate overcharge? Its a 48V 1998 Club Car. 5 year old batteries were bulged and according to the battery guy were overcharged. I just bought the cart and do not have any history from previous owner.

Re: 1998 Electric Club Car charge meter
Your battery guy needs to log onto BGW All 5 yr old batteries are bulged. Heck, most 3 yr old batteries are 2 .... The cases get hot during long charges and slump, (bulges) It's a typical result of the longer charges older & less responsive batteries need.
Your analog meter will run in the red as your charger brings your batteries up to 58-63v during the charge process. This is normal. Fully charged they will settle at 50.9v and 48v is empty. You will find lots of battery related reading by clicking on the link in my signature, if needed. |

Re: 1998 Electric Club Car charge meter
Thanks for reply. The batteries are brand new and have had a trip around the block before plugging in the charger. Don't they charge the batteries before shipment to the distributer? I have a gasser Yamaha 1988 golf cart that does 29.4 mph according to last check by my Yamaha dealer. I am disappointed by the slow speed of the club car 1998 Electric cart. Any way of upgrading to a faster speed. The previous owner said it has the high speed gears?? Tried clicking to find out more about electric carts on your signature and nothing happened??

Re: 1998 Electric Club Car charge meter
Electric carts were made for 18 holes of golf... there have been many improvements made in the basic cart since the beginning and there are many aftermarket speed and torque improvements you can make, but the fact remains that if DC vehicles were comparable to gasoline powered vehicles we would all be driving electric cars and trucks.
