Default G1 rear end

Hi,

I am planning to swap in a snowmobile engine into an old G1 golf cart. I have a question concerning the rear end in it. I had heard from someone that the rear end has some sort of governor that needs to be removed or the rear end will end up blowing up. Is this true or will I be fine?

The engine I'm planning on swapping in is a polaris 500cc engine.

Thanks in advance.

The rear end does have a governor in it, set to limit top speed to about 12 MPH. If you regularly exceed that, the mechanism will be maxed out, and I suppose in time could fatigue and break. If that happens, things will get messy inside the trans. It would be best to pop open the trans and remove the governor to prevent that possibility. You might also want to lock the differential at the same time. My snowmobile conversion had a tendency to spin one wheel and get stuck easily until I did this, but I run mine offroad.

So we removed the gonvenor parts.

Which is this stuff right?

I also have another question or two.

We can refill it with regular gear oil right?

And it only gets filled so the fluid level is level with the bottom of the upper drain plug correct?

Looks like you have the flyweights removed, I also removed the basket- shaped body as well. It just presses on to the input shaft. Correct on the gear oil and level. I recommend using synthetic gear oil if you can get it. Pricey, but you only need 1 quart. Less resistance and better protection than standard 80/90W.

GMB74 I am running a 81 G1 that I removed the governor off the top of the rear end is it ok to run that way. I am topping out at 28mph on a straight a way with regular sized wheels and tires. Been running that way for over 2 years now do you think I can blow the rear by running that fast, thanks Calvin.

As you can see from the above pix, the governor mechanism is sheetmetal flyweights held by a wire retainer in a sheetmetal basket. This presses against a sheetmetal flap attached to the shaft that sticks out of the transmission and goes to the throttle. There are more parts, but the point is, these parts are whizzing around inside the trans, trying to keep you from going much above about 15 MPH. If one of these pieces breaks and gets caught in the gears, bad things are going to happen. If you remove the mechanism, it is just peace of mind to eliminate that possibility of blowing up your transmission.
