Squirt a little oil on the valve stem and work valves a few times by hand. Install pushrods and valve cover. Put a little Marvel Mystery oil in the gas tank and go for a ride. Should be good.

After reading Toms post I remember having to work my valves by hand and oiling them like he says . It worked for me.

Unhappy Re: G2 suddenly lost compression

Well I tried to reseat the pushrod again. Inspected it and compared to the exhaust one which is working fine. everything looked good. then I cleaned off the oill on the valve lifter and got a strong light and sure enough the sides of the cup are worn in a couple places. only on the intake not the exhaust. from what I hear replacing the lifter is gonna be a bear for someone like me who lacks any mechanical talent. any quick fixes????

Are you confusing the valve lifter with the rocker arm?? The valve lifter would be inside the engine, while the rocker arm is under the valve cover. Not sure how the rocker arms come off, but wouldn't think it would be too difficult. I liked smallblock's idea where you would pull the head, clean the valves, guides and give all other parts a good "look see". Then do a little valve lapping and put it all back together. I suppose if you are "challenged" in this area, you could still pull the head and put it back together yourself after letting someone else freshen the heads. Would save some $$$ for you. - Good luck - RAY

no I took off the rocker arms and took out the pushrods keeping them seperated. then I shined a strong light down the cylinder and saw where the push rod is supposed to be seated. a little egg shaped hole . the exhaust one is fine, the intake "egg" is worn or chipped in a couple of places.if I pull the head will I have access to that.and is that the lifter??? thanks for all the input....greg

Well, this is a new one for me. Yes it is the lifter that the pushrod sets in. From your discprition, the lifter is damaged and needs replaceing. Can you take a picture of it? You would need to pull the engine and remove the primary clutch fixed sheave ( need a clutch puller tool for that, although some say you can do this and that and you can get it off without one) then the side case cover, rotating the crank to top dead center, remove the cam shaft (might want to mark it for absulute positive timeing) , (might be hard if eggshaped and cracked) remove the lifter, install a new or good used one, reinstall the cam (with the marks you made) reinstall everything (with a new case gasket) and adjust the valves (there's a sticky about that). Dont worry the pushrods are the same, but I would be hesitant to use the one that damaged the lifter. Good luck

Sorry to see that things got so ugly on your problem. The service manual is a good first step in your project. Good luck. - RAY
