G16 unstable ride after lift instal. Shocks/suspension?
I have a G16 that I just lifted. 6" lift and larger wheel and tires. Often when riding it feels like the suspension is mushy ie unstable almost like it wants to swerves some. Not sure if it's worn out springs and shocks or maybe I screwed something up. It still has original shocks. Any advise would be great.

Re: G16 unstable ride after lift instal. Shocks/suspension?
Johnny, I have 3 G16's with lifts, on the first one I did i installed the lift and eyeballed the toe in. Drove it for a few days and couldn't get over how sloppy the steering felt, kind of mushy and wandering all over the place. I finally pulled it in the shed and measured the toe in and it was way off. After I adjusted it it felt like a different cart. I now make sure that I adjust the toe in on each one I build and also check the tie rod ends as Joemama stated. I think the spec on my 2000 and 2001 G16's is toe'ed in about an 1/8'th of an inch. One last thought, you may also check your shocks, if one is bad and one is good it could also make it feel like it's wandering. You might also check the rear swing arm bushing, if it's bad it could let the rear end move a little from side to side and give you that swerving feeling.

Re: G16 unstable ride after lift instal. Shocks/suspension?
What everyone else said, but take off the top plate on the steering box, and pack all the wheel bearing grease you can get, into the steering box. Pack it full, then put it back together, and adjust the jamb nut over the pitman shaft so that there is no binding or drag when you turn the steering wheel, lock to lock. Raise the front wheels off the ground, so you can feel for drag or binding in the wheel. The toe has got to be correct at an 1/8". ( Old Smallblock trick!!)

Hey guys, thanks for that info but what is the correct way to get 1/8" toe? I've never done this before.
Thanks |

Re: G16 unstable ride after lift instal. Shocks/suspension?
Biggie, what I have done is drive the cart a little ways to make sure the suspension is settled in. I then measure from a point on the left tire to the right tire on the back side of the tires and the front side of the tires. You should notice that the measurements are different. What you are looking for is to have the distance across the front of the tires to be 1/8" shorter than the distance across the back of the tires. To change this distance you will loosen the lock nuts on the tie rods that run to each tire to make it steer. Once these are loosened you will spin the solid rod that the tie rods hook to. The rods have right hand threads at one end and left hand threads at the other. Make sure as you spin them in or out that you try to spin each one the same amount. Once you have the adjustment where you need it you will lock down the lock nuts on the rods.

On each side of the cart their is a left and right handed threaded tie rod. It allows you to turn the adjusting rod to pull the total length in or out without having to remove a tie rod from the mount to spin it by itself to adjust.
