Default Fixing up a 1996 CC DS 48v

Howdy! I've been a lurker here on and off for a while, but I've never had my own cart. Now it's looking like I will end up getting a hand me down from my in-laws as they get a new(er) cart. Though it's not a done deal just yet, I'm a dreamer and a planner so I figured I'd get a head start.

I'm a pretty handy guy, with a pretty thin wallet, and my want list for the cart keeps growing. I'm hoping some of you can help guide me through what will certainly end up as a long process.

It's a '96 CC DS 48v, I believe it's running the 6 8v batteries. It needs new batteries (current Trojan's are 5 years old, I've read that Trojan is no longer considered the best...who is?), and it is missing the passenger front light assembly. So by my estimations, I'm out about $700 right there.

Additionally, my neighborhood has some long steep inclines, and the cart has historically not performed well on inclines. What is the best budget mod that can really help me gain speed for the hills?

Side note: someone locally is unloading a nice looking 2002 CC DS IQ Regen with some accessories, new batteries, and a broken frame for $1,200. Is it worth it for me to try and splurge on this broken cart to get new batteries, an already painted body, nicer wheels/tires, various other accessories (mirror, hitch, diamond plating, bumper), and a newer (better?) motor? Can I even do that and put it all on my frame?

Also - long term plan will be to lift/paint/upholster, but for now I'd like to try and minimize the costs now and just make sure my wife has a reliable cart to take our son around the neighborhood.

I'm a little scatter brained right now as I've been learning a lot from reading here in the past few days. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.
