Default G8 cranks, but will not start

Hey all - I am brand new to the golf cart world, so hoping you superstars can help me figure this out... I picked up an old G8 that had clearly been sitting for a while, and needed quite a bit of TLC. It was completely DOA when I got it, and someone had removed the valve cover... upon further investigation I found that the exhaust valve was stuck, and I guess the previous owner gave up.

Here is what I have done so far:

Washed it :)
New battery
New air filter
New air box latches
Drained and cleaned gas tank
new fuel
new fuel filter
The stuck exhaust valve...
Removed cylinder head
punched the old valve out (it was stuck with carbon I think)
cleaned the carbon out of the firing chamber
replaced intake valve seal
replaced head gasket
replaced valve cover gasket
replaced oil line to valve cover
Adjusted valve clearance
new fuel pump (it is now pumping fuel)
New aftermarket carb
new fuel line from pump to carb
new ignition key switch
replaced 10A fuse (it was missing)
New spark plug

So now when I turn on the key and step on the gas, the starting motor turns. The reverse horn works, the lights work. The little pilot light on the dash does not light up, but I am not clear on whether or not is should... The bulb looks good.

When I crank it over, I have gotten it to pop a few times, but not much more than that. It just feels flooded. I pulled the spark plug and the spark looks maybe a little weak - sort of a yellowish color I think, but I am not a pro here.

The wiring inside the cart seems a little crunchy, and I see a lot of posts about grounding, but I am not terribly clear on what I am supposed to do with that, and I would like to rule out the simple stuff before I drop $100 on a new coil. There is a little bus fuse that comes off of the starter relay, and it tests good. So the only two fuses I can find appear to be good.

Any other thoughts? Is there a way to check the voltage regulator or igniter?

Thanks in advance for anyone who can help!

A quick test to either confirm or rule out ground issues: Use a jumper cable from engine (solid metal) to battery (-). That "pilot light" on the dash is a low oil level warning. will not come on unless there is problem. You can check it's operation when you change oil. It should come on when the oil is drained. Key does not need to be on, but battery must be connected.

Meimk - Roger that - Just tried the jumper. No change. BTW - I get 12.68V positive to Negative, and 12.59 Positive to Engine.

Are you choking it?

Jwgoad - I initially did not choke, but then when I couldn’t get any action I pulled the choke out a few times. One more thing... I stuck the old plug back in, and the one that was in there was wet, smelled like gas.

Should I choke it on initial startup?

Yes. Pull the choke out & hold it out while you push the pedal down.

Finally got it figured out... the exhaust valve push rod had fallen out. I must have not had it seated properly when I put the rockers back on and adjusted the valve clearance. Got it back in place, and it fired right up! Drove it for the first time today!
