Convert a 36v charger to 48v?
As the title says, can this be done? If not why?

Re: Convert a 36v charger to 48v?
No. Not easily. Chargers are designed to work with the nominal voltage of 36 or 48V. A 36V charger can not charge a 48V pack. It's output voltage will be too low.

Re: Convert a 36v charger to 48v?
I have one that you can.... Its a DPI charger intended for Yamaha OEM use. One of the 4 settings is 36v. As for any others i have ever seen, nope, not unless it was specifically designed to do it. There are a few others out there with a 36v/48v switch, but they were made specifically to be able to do that. If you were so inclined, you could do some math, get the correct type of wire, grind the welds off your transformer, disassemble it, remove the old secondary wires, rewind the new wires with the correct number of turns, reassemble the transformer, re weld it, re dip it in varnish....... Are you a transformer manufacturer? Im not.

Re: Convert a 36v charger to 48v?
Transformer AND capacitor work together, so it's a little more involved than "just" upping the transformer voltage and current. It's a ferroresonant match that has to be re-engineered.
Or you can "simply" plagiarize a design. |

A HD variac and a LOT of engineering could do it.

Re: Convert a 36v charger to 48v?
I have to clarify... A coil and core charger can be over-drived. A newer switch-mode PSU can't. Most transformers can easily be over-driven, even if it requires the addition of a cooling fan. I routinely push transformers to two and three times their rating.
