Default Charger question

I am getting new batteries for my 93 marathon, i also want to get a new charger. I see the units that cost close to $300 and I see the $80 overnight chargers...what's the difference?

TRUELY....you get what you pay for.

If you want a new charger that will be dependable for years to come, go to Scottyb's cartsunlumited.net and get one of the chargers he sells. you can NOT go wrong.

Amen.

The thing to remember is your batteries are "consumables" The better you treat them, the longer they will last. A good charger will give you many more charge/discharge/rechargs cycles.

The $80 eBay chargers are only 5 amp chargers. They work well as a pack maintainer, because they have float capabilities, but they lack that 15-20 amp bulk charge that the batteries need.

A wet cell battery needs a bulk rate charge equal to 10% of it's capacity or the heavy elements will be left on the bottom of the cells. Over time the water will stagnate reducing the battery capacity and useful life.

You need a 18-20 amp charger.

If I upgrade my 36v marathon to 48v will any golf cart charger work? I can get a 48v club car charger for free but would need to adapt it to the SB50 plug.

Nope, almost all club car 48v chargers (excluding ERIC) are dumb power supplies. Meaning the charge profile, and charger turn on/ turn off are handled by the OBC on the cart. The OBC cannot be moved to the charger and still work correctly, because it counts energy taken out during use, then puts an appropriate amount back in at next charge. Just about any other 48v charger (that has it's own control board in the charger) would work tho.

Is there any chargers that will do 36 and 48v?

Technically yes. Stanley makes one. Multiple members tried them some years ago. Results were mixed at best. There has been no long term comments about them I'm aware of.
