Default Using powerwise to maintain new batteries

Hi --- I am new to EZ-GO carts... I just bought a 2004 for my wife to tool around the community in. It came with 6 brand new batteries, date 2-2010 which was a big plus and the cart is in very good shape and runs great. My wife loves it.

My concern is to maintain the batteries properly since they are expensive. I read thru a lot of different posts from the past few years and there seems to be some variance of opinion, but I did some reading the manual provided from one post:
http://products.jacobsen.com/img/manuals/28646.pdf
With regard to the Powerwise 28115 GO4 charger, the manual says:
"If the batteries become fully charged in a short period of time (under two hours), the charger will shut off. If the open circuit battery voltage drops to the point that charge is required the charger will turn itself on until the batteries are fully charged. The charger features an internal timer that will permit no more than 16 hours of continuous use."
---
I'm not clear why it specifies "short period of time", but it *sounds* like it is designed such that any time the voltage drops to where charge is required, it will "turn itself on until the batteries are fully charged." That is in fact what the former owner told me as well. But I'd like to hear it from the experts in this forum. Can I leave the cart parked for several months with the charger plugged in and expect it to maintain the batteries at proper charge levels, or is there a risk to damaging the batteries and shortening their lifespan?

If this is NOT recommended that what is the best procedure for storing the cart for 3-4 months at a time? I read the recommendations about Delta-Q but I would rather NOT have to shell out those kinds of bucks. Any and all advice much appreciated :-)
