Marathon to Jeep Conversion
I pickup up a 1988 Marathon on Craigslist for $50 last year. I decided to create an old jeep body on it. I want it to look like a CJ-2A or the original Army MB. I was able to take some time off this holiday season and do quite a bit of the work. Here it is, in pretty rough shape. It sags to the right and also has a bent front axle. Other issues: Battery trays rusted out, steering wheel spline broken. Burn hole through seat, apparently due to fire in the past.

Re: Marathon to Jeep Conversion
The first fabricating I did was to replace the front axle. At first, I thought I might be able to bend it straight and reinforce it with angle iron. No way that was going to happen. After beating on it for 20 minutes or so, I decided to use a hitch receiver I had laying around to create a new one. Here is a shot of the bent axle and the new fabrication. I had to cut off the spindles, shock mounts and spring mounts from the old axle and weld them on the new one.

Re: Marathon to Jeep Conversion
Since the "Jeep" will have a body panel next to the floor, I decided to move the seat back 3 inches. This will allow a little more floor space to make it easier to get behind the steering wheel. To provide the 3 inches of space, I've moved three of the batteries behind the rear axle. Here is a shot of the stripped down cart with the new battery trays. There are also a couple photos of framing out the jeep body. The next step will be to add body panels.

Re: Marathon to Jeep Conversion
Nice! I have a CJ3 grille and hood to cut down. I need to make fenders yet.

i like where you're going with this build...Are you going to leave that receiver attached to your front axle? Its kinda pointing at the ground!
