darn setback
putting a new gasket on the side case and taping new threads for the oil plug I came across this. The previous owner had stripped the drain plug. Put in some oversize thing. I tapped in new threads. Thought it looked good but noticed this crack.I dont believe I did this. There was some old gasket stuff inside the crack. The only welder around here I know and trust to weld aluminium is my father. He was a welding instructor. He is in Arizona until at least April. Can I trust JB weld on this? I kind of want to have this on the road before he gets back.

Re: darn setback
That sucks, is it a NPT thread? That will force it apart as you tighten it, I would try to tap a normal thread if it is and use some kind of gasket/washer to seal, smooth off the top surface.
You can use JB it holds great on alum but its best in a compression mode then you don't worry about it coming loose. I would cut some of the crack out and do it, build up that area. But if you are going to weld it later and its just a plug I would silicone it up until later, be gentle tightening it, and weld it right later. You can get a urethane based sealer, its like silicone but stronger. Its wicked stuff and harder to get off. If you are worried about silicone holding for a while. Urethane stuff is like super rtv and then some, you can lay out a bead and it dries into rope. Like permatex black urethane sealer, there are others, its the same stuff that holds the windshield in your car. Notice how windshields don't fall out in crashes even. |

Re: darn setback
I agree, how long has it been holding for you until now. Do a temporary fix and check often. Have dad weld it when he gets back.

Re: darn setback
I just got this G9 late last summer. It had a leak on the side case that had everything pretty oily. Notice the drain plug when I did the 1st oil change. I drilled out with 1/2 inch and tapped stsndard but not enough threads. I gooped up with permitex which did hold with minor drip. Now that I have it apart tapped 14 1.5. Threads look nice but now see the crack after I cleaned it up. I have alot to do the cart. Its a winter project. Needs a major cleaning of the oil Bushings the front. Springs in the rear because of the rear seat. Needs a paint job also. Pretty easy to put the engine back in last so I might just wait. I don't know yet. I would like to do something permanent

Re: darn setback
I would probably weld it. JB works but you would need to run a bead around the whole plug to make it thicker so it didn't crack. I doubt its stronger than aluminum but it is pretty tough and machinable.

Re: darn setback
I didn't read the other responses, but you use JB weld now, you'll contaminate it for welding later!!

Re: darn setback
Well the engine is going to sit on the bench apart for now. I'm going to get the rest of it done before I decide. Leaning towards waiting until I can get it welded. Might just have to wait for my father to come home and have him weld it. I was never a very good welder so I wont touch it. I really dont know about any other shop around here I would trust. I am unsure of any of the JB type stuff. I'm in North Dakota so if I can get it on the road by late April or early may is about right anyway.

Re: darn setback
Jb weld will work, but it's a temp fix at best (if it works). It's a "slow leak is better than a fast leak" kind of thing. Weld it.

Re: darn setback
Ill just get it welded then. It's a "slow leak is better than a fast leak" kind of thing. Well not when you park on the neighbors driveway. You need a no leak. Even in my garage where I spill oil I need no leak out of anything I drive.
