Default 1977 piston and rings

I am being told by a supplier that the same piston that fits 80-90 ezgo 2cycle will fit my 1977 Robin engine. Is that correct ? Also can I put a 25 or 50 mm over piston in and leave my cyclinder. It is not scored or damaged just some wear. Thanks.

What?? You cannot add an oversize piston without boring the cylinder to match.

The 2PG engine ran from 1976 to early 1989 when it was replaced by the 3PG. The only compatible part between the two was the piston so the answer is yes.

The rest of your question confuses me. Are you wanting to put an oversize piston in a standard bore?

To be honest this old cart just gets my wife around our 10 acres and I want to do the right thing but I can tell the piston was prettty loose . I was trying to get by with not buying a cylinder and just a piston. I can take readings on cylinder and piston thought maybe a bigger piston might fit the wear on the cylinder what do you think and thanks for your help.

The wear in your cylinder will not be perfectly concentric. You will need to bore the cylinder to fit an oversized piston.

Remember that a 2 cycle is far more fussy about crankcase pressure than a 4 cycle. You will have blow by and that will increase pressure and probably blow the seals out. Putting a standard piston and rings back in might work but really you should get it reamed out +25 and put in a new piston. Now you have a cart that will not leave your wife stranded and far from home

I really appreciate all the help. I am either going to buy the top end with cylinder too or buy a 25mm over piston and have my cylinder done locallly. My only question is what do I tell the machine shop to bore it to? I have no evidence my seal are out buy since I have the motor out of the cart I guess I should do that too right?

Joe, have Your machine shop measure your cylinder first. I'm sure someone here has the specs for you. The guy at the shop then can advise as to which piston kit to buy. In the very extreme, the cylinder will need replacement. Most likely you'll need the first or second oversize. Once you get the piston, give it and the cylinder to the machine shop and have them fitted. It may cost a bit more, but you'll know its done right.

To change the seals you will need to pull the clutch and the flywheel and both tasks need a puller but it is no big deal. As I always like to say its your cart and your money but if it were me I would change the seals whilst the engine is out. Old Skool offers good advice however I bought a top end kit and got a piston, rings cylinder, gaskets and so on for around $200. It worked for me.

NO BORING until you get it properly measured! A machine shop will know how to do this and can recommend the size of piston to purchase.
