Default Steering Wheel Slop

1986 EZGO, is this common? Is there a way to tighten up the gear lash perhaps to eliminate the freeplay in the steering wheel?

Or is there a different fix, or is this something I have to live with?

Sadly there is no adjustment on your steering box. You can buy a replacement rack and pinion on ebay for about $100 but you shoud first ensure that is the problem area. I would get someone to oscillate the steeering wheel whilst you look underneath at the pitman arm to see if that is were the slop is. You could then try packing the box with grease to see if that helps. If you still have an issue check all your pivot points and regrease. A 1/10th inch play in each will equal an inch play in the train. Then jack the cart up and with a hand at the top and bottom of the wheel shake to see if the king pins are worn. Finally using a square check the toe in which should be 1/4 inch. Having done all that you may just accept that it is 25 years old and live with it.

In Yamahas, I know that there is an adjustment inside the gear box. Mine has.
