Question Ezgo drive belt acts as brake

I have an 85 ezgo marathon 2 cycle. I just put a new drive clutch on it, along with a new belt and when i get into high rpm's, the clutches move in and out to get different gear ratios, but they pinch the belt and it all acts as a brake and i come to a stop. The belt is the correct belt i checked, and i thought maybe the driven clutch was frozen up but it still moves in and out just fine... Im stumped, i thought the new drive clutch would fix it. Maybe its just that the belt needs to be worn in? I dont know but please help me out tell me what you think!!!!

I have the same thing happen to me when I put a shorter belt on. What happens is the belt is going to far down in the driven clutch. It would grab the rivets in the side of the clutch and pull the belt down. It would be like you slammed on the brakes.

What kind of driven clutch did you get?

Some one else was having the same problem and had a comet clutch like I have. He when to ezgo and got the factory driven clutch from them and it works great.

Also are your motor mounts good? I could move my motor cradle about 1 inch side to side. Found i had 2 bad motor mounts. put new one in and it does not move. If your motor mounts were bad your motor could be moving when you put the torque on the belt at high speed. Making the belt go down to far also. If you have to replace your motor mounts do all of them.

I put new motor mounts in over the summer and i just bought a comet duster. I am going to look tomoro to see if my driven clutch is frozen, but i am pretty sure it isnt. Also when you say driven clutch, are you talkin about the one that attaches to the rear end or the one that attches to the motor.

The Drive clutch is on the motor. The driven clutch is on the rear end.

Some members stated in the past posts that they had this problem with Comet Driven clutches, also tearing up the sides of the belt.
