more amps or volts?
I got an 85 club car given to me. The batteries that we're in it were left dry for a few years so instead of dropping a grand into it on new 6v deep cycles I put in 3 12v marine batteries instead. The problem is when go to climb a hill I just creep up it. My voltage drops to 34v - 32v. So do I need more volts or more amps to climb with ease? The whole thing is stock if that helps

Re: more amps or volts?
85 CC is a 5 solenoid resistor coil speed control system. At wide open throttle the motor has unlimited access to the battery pack. Basically your given her all she has got Captain. The stock batteries would have provided more amperage which = more torque but voltage = speed.... That being said, you can NOT put 48v through your current system.
A solid state conversion is needed for true performance upgrades. |

Re: more amps or volts?
So to pull like a champ my 36v system is just mediocre? Should I go ahead and upgrade to a higher voltage system? All its for is putting around back roads, flea markets and fairs

Re: more amps or volts?
I too have what is an '85 cart and what was a 36v resistor cart. I did Scotty's upgrade and went from a dog to one of, if not the fastest, carts in camp. I can catch and pass any of the stock 48v carts on the hills. Takes a few bucks but I for one am glad I went from resistor 36v to 48v solid state. Stock 36 series motor.

Re: more amps or volts?
The Marine Batteries are what's at issue. But as an alternative opinion - the question becomes - is a 1985 cart worth $1200 - $1600 (just a rough guess on dollars) for a full-shot of hill climbing & speed??
My opinion is no, unless someone has already dumped a whole whack of customized cash into other things that are on it already. I'm not a cart-year-snob, believe me. My cart is 48v 1996 and the drivetrain is stock because it is actually used for golf (funny...I know). But it looks nice with some visual & finish upgrades - because that's my particular preference. BUT - you paid nothing for it (if I read your intro correctly) so adding $500-$600 for the proper batteries (US Battery, Sam's Club etc.) might just be worth it, if the cart was treated well and isn't too tired looking. You won't be able to race anyone to the flea market - but you'll be able to climb the hill to get there. |

Re: more amps or volts?
Also when I plug my lestronic 2 36v charger in it runs up near 30 amps. Is that normal for running 3 marine batteries in series?

Re: more amps or volts?
Marine batteries are the wrong batteries for a golf cart as everyone else has said. Yes they will move your cart but not very well and not for very long.

Upgrade that thing with a scottyb kit jerod!
Scotty's company is excellent, you can't go wrong... Even though I have never installed one of his kits, I have heard nothing but good things about them. |
