Default 1987 Marathon Project

I picked up my first cart about 1-1/2 months ago. I have been working on and off on various things. I did a tune up, fabbed up a 5" lift, ran across some 22"x11"x8" rims and tires at the right price, and have been playing around with clutch shims. I still haven't gotten it where I want it though. The 3/8" on the secondary didn't seem to do a whole bunch, except nock the top end down a bit. I am thinking the higher spring tension is keeping the belt from dropping down into high gear? The 1/8" primary shim seemed to help the low end, but the top speed is only 16-17mph. I think I am going to try and put a 1/4" shim in the secondary, and see if that improves the top end. I figure I would take a break on the clutch business, and throw together a cage/backseat, and front brush guard I have been envisioninrg. Here are a few pics of the starting cart through the current progress. Im not sure who has been having more fun, my 7 year old daughter, or myself.

I am a steel fabricator for a living. I used Solidwoks CAD software to put my thoughts on sheet, adjusted some measurements, and fabbed it up at my shop this weekend in about 5 hours. The tube is 1-1/4" sch 40 pipe, which is heavier than most people use I believe. There was some stock lying around, and I have a die set for the hydraulic pipe bender for that size. I am fortunate enough to have these tools at my disposal. It really only cost me my time. I am not finished with it yet.....

How cool. I want my next cart to be a project (well, an easy project).

I'd like to get my granddaughters to help me, then give it to them. Maybe next year or 2015. They're still a bit too young.

I used a 3/16" shim on the primary,pre-mix at 100:1(1-1/2oz per gal.),Govenor unhooked,Open-element air-filter with stock jetting.and 22"tires.It ran 23-24mph on a decent trail or road, and the plug was burning perfect.I tried the short-belt,and also shimming the secondary, neither helped. The belt actually dropped performance with the shim in the primary-clutch.Cool Project, keep the kids involved,it teaches them a lot more than just how to build or fix something.

Our buggies are 'bout like two peas in a pod. Might want to consider is replacing the existing shocks and extenders with auto shocks. Most fellers use Monroe 31125 front and 31000 rear. Makes the ride smooth as Kansas City gingham!

Thanks for the advice pachanga, and apaladin. I am planning on changing the shocks in the near future. Pachanga....what do you mean by open air element? Like a cone style one from the auto store?
