Yeah, I don't have access to that kind of equipment either. Wish I knew someone who could build me a locker. I'm not excited to weld on my perfectly good gears. But I know the first time I get "one wheel peel" and get stuck....I'm going to be kicking myself....

I don't mind welding them up i'm just unsure of the strength I'v read that you should heat them up before welding? I am confident in my welding just worried about the "weak links" of the chain if you know what I mean. campground is all gravel and trails very rarely if ever it will see pavement don't want grenade it guess i'll do some more research

I'm worried about it too, although if it were done right it would be just like a spool and prob zero chance of the welds breaking. The biggest thing when welding these gears is getting the parts completely clean. Any oil/grease is going to be a big problem. Yes, when welding really thick steel/cast iron the parts should be preheated so there is better penetration and less/no cold starts. Once a good high amp welder is buzzing it's fine because the heat generated from the welding itself gets the metal hot enough to penetrate. It's where you start the weld that doesn't penetrate well because the metal is cold for the first few seconds, that's the weak link. Also having a large enough welder is key. Don't try this with a little flux core 90amp hobby welder....you need the big dog!

Curious if you ever welded up your diff? I'm disappointed in the amount of traction I get in the snow and am thinking I need 2 wheel drive...LOL instead of 1 wheel drive....

I'd be worried about breaking an axle. Rather be stuck, than stuck with a broke axle!! Ask Ess!!

Slonomo, have you tried tire chains for traction in the snow?

No I haven't. I should get some and give it a try. I have plenty of traction, just not on both wheels. Most atv's I've owned and ridden do just fine in the 12" deep snow in two wheel drive. That's what I'm after. Never needed chains with those.

I bought a set for about $40.00 when it snowed late last year. Naturally we haven't had snow since, go figure. I've read where guys with snow plows were using them with good results of course that doesn't help while riding in summer.
