Default stock tires 18x8.5x8

these are both links , 18x8.5x8 , why is the one so much narrower, the only difference is the rim width . the tire width is 6" on one 5" on the other how is this possible

There is obviously more difference than just rim width. Both may have "LINKS" stamped on the sidewall, but the tread pattern is different on the two shown and neither matches the tread pattern of "LINKS" tires currently being produced by Carlisle.

Basically you have two tires from different generations that were sold under the same model name, and specifications may have changed between generations.

The tire size stamped on the sidewall is "Nominal" size and everything except the last number (Rim Diameter) is very approximate.

The first set of numbers (18 ) is the generic tire height class. The actual tire height (Diameter) will vary and the mounted tire diameter will depend on the width of the rim it is mounted on.

The second set of numbers (8.50) is the generic tire width class. The tire width is the widest point from sidewall to sidewall. That will also vary according to the width of the rim the tire is mounted on.

The third set of numbers (8 ) is the rim diameter. This is fairly true and consistent since diameters of rims tend to be pretty close from manufacturer to manufacturer.

The tread width is not defined.

If mounted on different width rims, the same tire would have different mounted dimensions.

About the only thing the two tires pictured have in common is that they are made of rubber.
Other than that, it is an apples to oranges comparison.

That is strange, give Carlisle a call and ask them.
