Lost All 48 Volt Current
I have a 2014 S4 and was recently adding some lights and stereo, when things quickly went downhill hours before loading it onto the trailer for vacation.
At any rate, I was doing one last check of the key switch to try to identify keyed power and I accidentally arched two of the terminals. I seem to have lost all 48 volt power as the LED meter is dark and nothing but the lights work when I turn the key on. I've replaced the switch, but that hasn't helped restore a thing. I've come across several fuses by the tow/maintenance switch, but all are in good shape. The disturbing thing I've noticed is that I have no status light at all on the controller, but I can't recall if that was always on or not. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. |

Re: Lost All 48 Volt Current
I'm not sure if this might help, but here are a few of the things I've tried up to this point:
Looked for Reed switch as indicated in some of the posts for older carts and it appears that I do not have one. At least not where it was suggested they were on the older carts. Top of the solenoid reads 50+volts yet the grey directional feed reads 0. I'm hoping there is a fuse between the key switch and the speed controller, but I have yet to locate it. |

Re: Lost All 48 Volt Current
S4 is a "new style" txt, not rxv correct?

Re: Lost All 48 Volt Current
Correct. All the parts I've been buying for it have been txt and they all seem to fit just fine.
I should add it is the Express S4 High Output, not sure if that will matter. |

Re: Lost All 48 Volt Current
Please clarify which two terminals touched. You indicated you were checking out the key switch, but I don't see how connecting them together would do anything other than momentarily power up the controller.

Re: Lost All 48 Volt Current
He probably has a 4 terminal key switch with lights. There is a 48v wire and a 12v wire on it. Touching those two together might create a spark. If he wasn't in "tow" position on the run-tow switch then he could have spiked the $1000 controller.
I would attempt to reset the controller. Place run-tow switch to tow then disconnect the battery pack for a minute or so. Connect battery pack, wait 30 seconds then switch run-tow to run. |

Re: Lost All 48 Volt Current
You are correct in that my switch is a 4 terminal with lights. I tried placing in tow and disconnecting the the pack, but just as a last resort tried it one more time. Nothing other than a pretty big spark when I reconnect one of the smaller grounds back to the pack.

Re: Lost All 48 Volt Current
So I checked the Curtis manual and it appears the status light should be lit as soon as key power is applied. I located a relay under the tow - maintenance switch, but it's very difficult to get at and I'm not sure it was on one of the terminal paths that were arced.
I'm not exactly sure which terminals it was, but I believe it was I and B or I and L as i think I was trying to get a reading on the center terminal of the key switch when it happened. |

Re: Lost All 48 Volt Current
So I finally had some time to diagnose this a bit further. I obtained the Curtis manual and was able to identify which pin is supplying power to the controller, which it has. My thoughts now are since the controller is getting power yet the status light on the controller is not lit that the controller is fried.
Could someone please confirm this thinking for me, or provide me with more details on what else I should check? |
