Pre 1974 175cc EzGo 2 cycle gas ignition points
I have got involved with an older EzGo Golf Cart that has the pre 1974 engine that takes the ignition points that are discontinued. Has anyone had any luck using a set of replacement points from a different model, different points plate, or actually switching it over to an electronic ignition system? Everyone we call says to junk the cart??? This seem rediculous for a $20.00 set of points! This is all I need and we are back in business but can not find anywhere that anyone has dealt with these. Thanks in advance!

Re: Pre 1974 175cc EzGo 2 cycle gas ignition points
It's not a cleaning that they need. They have been heated fo so long, they are burned down to nothing. And the spring is very weak and floating at any speed other than slow. I just can't believe no one makes a set of points for this anymore...RIDICULOUS!

Here is a page of golf cart points. Maybe you could adapt a Cushman or old Harley.

Re: Pre 1974 175cc EzGo 2 cycle gas ignition points
That is our next attempt. Having a solid aluminum points plate fabricated and gonna try either old Harley points or one off a tractor. Just as long as we can get the points in the correct position. I believe the heat is the main factor as to why points will not last in this style engine. If it works, may just be able to bring a lot if old carts back to life. Just can't believe no one has done this yet!

According to EzGo, they just gave up on their design!

Did EZGO even make a gas-powered cart prior to 1974? I thought they were all 36v electrics until 1974 when they offered the 2-stroke.

Re: Pre 1974 175cc EzGo 2 cycle gas ignition points
I have rebuilt old point sets for obsolete outboard motors by using a dremel cut off wheel and removing the contact surfaces froma common set of points and then silver soldering the new contacts to the old set arms. Dunno what you can do about the spring other than trying to adapt a spring from another similar set. Vellman kits makes a transistorized ignition module that only uses the points as a low voltage trigger thus making them last a very long time. Kit is $25 available from Vellman. E-Mail me for any other questions you may have.

Racing go carts have points to electronic ignition kits. We are looking into those also.

Sorry 1989marathon...yes, gas engines were 1971-1974, before they changed to a different engine. Anywhere you look it says pre-1974 points are no longer available.
