Grinding noise in rear

The rear of my 01 Club Car has a grinding noise, the drive clutch is new and a performance one, belts are new too, it does it in maintenance mode or driving so I would guess it would be a input bearing. It doing it in maintenance mode rules out brakes and axle bearings.

Is this a common problem? I do all my own work on everything from gas powered RC to 18 wheelers so I feel I could do it, but my local cart shop only charges $40 an hour and at that rate I might as well take it in unless its super easy. Any thoughts??

The Input shaft bearing farthest from the clutch is a common source of grinding noises in the unitized transaxles. Not easy until you've done a few. It is important when it is dismantled to check the spur gear ( a bad bearing will damage this gear)and the syncros while you are in there. Easiest, the first time, to remove the entire engine/axle assy to access the transaxle cover. Will need a few bearing removal tools and a press to reassemble. Labor intensive in a shop unless they have done enough to do it in an hour w/o pulling the diff.

Yeah at $40 an hour, and the guy said most rear end issues are a 1 1/2 to 2 hour job ........ I'll just let him do it LOL

When you replace the bearing on the side opposite the driven pulley, go with a sealed bearing, not a shielded bearing it will last much longer. This bearing has a hard time getting enough oul slung up there especially when idling or in neutral. I finally did this on all 5 of the carryall transaxles at the golf course.
