Marathon 1989 2 stroke clutch
Ok I need some advice. I just got a free marathon that has been sitting outside for a while. The engine will start and run. The drive clutch shaft is rusted and will not move back and forth. Can I sand the rust off of it? Also any advice on putting a new belt on it? Do you split the driven clutch and put it as low as it will go? Then slip it over the drive clutch to the shaft? The belt is really tight. Do the teeth go up or down?

Re: Marathon 1989 2 stroke clutch
OK, easy here, the clutch is screwed up, so what do you have to lose by sanding the rust? Personally I would want to take it off, and apart, and clean things up and put it back together, but if you want to just try cleaning the rust off and see if that helps, go for it.
So far as installing a belt, I did it by spreading the driven clutch as you said. Now so far as "teeth" go not sure what you mean. The drive belt is a V and the smaller part of the V goes to the inside. Yeah there are "teeth" of a sort, they are just to allow the belt to make the tight turns it needs to around the pulleys. Tom |

Thank you for the reply. The cart is an 89 but is a 2pg. Would that take 88 parts or 89.

After a lot of reading. The muffler sTts vertical on the driver side and the spark plug is also on the drivers side. I just need to know if what belt I need. The 88 engine is basically 45" and the 89 is 41". I am afraid I am going to mess something up if I try to make this 41" belt work. It is super tight.

The belt on mine is tight also, even sticks up a bit from the driven pulley. The 2pg has the belt going from side to side in the cart, I THINK the 3pg has the bet going fore and aft. The 3pg I believe also has the plug more on top, while the 2pg has the plug going in sideways right by the muffler.
The drive belt should not be loose or have any slack in it, not like a riding mower belt would be when disengaged, those things have a ton of slack. These are tighter than that. Tom RIT rocks, cancer sucks. sent from my S5 by tap a talk |

So I know now I have a 2pg just wondering what belt it would take. Would it be different than the 3pg? I could not get the 41" belt I tried this weekend on.

Really not sure which belt you need, but I know that I had to get my belt pretty far down in the driven pulley to get it on. That said it was not really hard to do.

Re: Marathon 1989 2 stroke clutch
I had mine all the way down and it will not even start to slide over drive clutch side. Maybe some one who has a 2pg 89 marathon can give me a number off of there belt. Also you are right cancer does suck. Lost my dad to it a year ago.
