Default yamaha gas cart having drive issues

I have a late 90's Yamaha Gas cart. I am unsure of the exact model as the cart has a G19E code on the body but the everything I read says that is an electric and this is a gas. I cannot locate a serial number in the places shown and the body looks like it may be a replacement to the cart. I bought the cart cheap and the guy said it has sat for a while and needed a tune up. I figured it would be worth it to do the tune up and get it running right play around for a bit sell it if I don't want it anymore. I found some codes on the air box which pointed me to the tune up kit for a G16/20/21/22 and everything fit fine so I have it narrowed down to that.

I didn't know a lot about carts and am learning as I go. The oil had gas in it and I drained it and replaced it with a quart of SAE 10W40 recommended by a marine mechanic for Florida Climate. I only put in 1 quart. I drained the bad gas out (it was old and smelled bad) I cleaned the carb, replaced the gas lines, replaced the fuel filter, replaced the air filter. I filled the tank with some high test gas and the cart seems to run much better, making progress at least...

In Neutral the cart runs great, good throttle response, revs great, runs like I think it should. Then shift into drive and it is slow to respond. Step on the pedal slowly and the cart slowly responds and gets up to speed but not as fast as it runs in neutral. Reverse yields the same result. The clutch wheel towards the back has a little play or wiggle in it (this may be normal?) Not sure why the cart seems to lag in drive/reverse. I tried to drive it through some tall grass but barely made it out.

The cart has a lift on it but it appears to be shackles and shocks, pretty sure it was a home made creation. I will create a thread later to discuss that.

I just want to get the cart running right so we can enjoy it then I will worry about the lift and cosmetics.

I appreciate any help anyone can offer while I figure out this puzzle...

Can you post some pics of your clutches with belt on Beeker?
Also measure the belt width, you might need one.
Front clutch is called a drive clutch, the rear one is called the driven clutch.
As far as take off power, Watch the drive clutch when it closes to take off, where does the belt start pulling at?
Middle or high in the drive clutch and the belt might be stretched out, or the driven clutch is not closing all of the way when you stop.
The belt should be at the top of the driven clutch for a 1st gear take off.
If it starts lower(but I doubt it) then I would check clutches for sticking.
Hit two or three shots of grease in zerk fitting.

Belt is not at the top of the driven clutch. It is down inside and fairly loose.

Belt is one of the major issues of your problem, especially with it lifted. New belt is 1 3/16", and will help alot. Need to grease the clutches, like Crash said, then watch for clutch articulation. With a little maint. you should have it up and running soon!

Check first if your brakes are binding. Jackup the rear wheels. Turn the wheel by hand and if it's difficult or almost impossible to rotate, then the brake linings are stuck to the drum. Do this for both wheels.

Thanks for the advice. I'm going to start with the belt and go from there. I will check the brakes and wheels this weekend. I found the belt locally should pick it up today and get it installed tonight. Will keep posted.

from what I've read when a belt reaches 1inch it is worn out and should be replaced so hopefully that makes the difference.... I know the feeling.
when I bought my g1 it had been sitting behind a shed for like 10 years and had a small tree growing out of the seat!....got it home and had it running in an hour :)..... almost 7 years later and still working out the "bugs" its fun though.
