G21a Yamahauler top speed of 8mph!!!

Hi, yeah, the title says it all, I have a top speed of 8mph going on a flat surface, and believe it or not, she goes faster uphill, I am thinking this is a gear issue, I have cleaned out the carb, so there is no problem there, and it looks like the governor is at maximum setting (according to a yamaha guy), I was hoping for some clues as to what my problem might be.

I am hoping not to spend over 2k on a new transmission, basically, that is all the money I have for this refurb anyway, any suggestions that may save me a buck would be much appreciated, Thanks in Advance!!!

Have you tried opening up the carb while the cart is running(making sure the flap on top of the carb is opening up during operation?)

I am not sure how to do that, I have an air filter on top of the carb, whereas the carb is mounted on the side of the motor. It is like she gets to a certain RPM and then won't go past that, are you thinking maybe a throttle cable issue?

yes Thats what I was thinking..I have a G16 in my shop right now with the same problem...however if I reach down while running the cart in neutral I can pull the throttle cable running to the carb and the cart screams to life...I'm replacing the throttle cable this afternoon

Sweet, let me know how it turns out, that sounds a lot cheaper than a new transmission.

OK, so I put her on the stands and placed her in neutral, I revved the gas pedal and she runs like hell for about three seconds and then drops to about half of the RPM's and stays there, never getting back up to the original RPM's, any hints as to what my cause this?

Hi are you still using the gas pedal or are you doing what camaro did ie manually opening the carb? If you are still using the pedal then I would think your still using the govonor. Camaro is bypassing the govonor or streached cable by manually operating the carb,thus furthering his diagnosis that its a cable or govonor issue.

sorry, I am not a very mechanical guy, I will remove the air filter and see what happens when I run it on a straight away, if it works fine, then I am sure it will be the gov, I'll keep you posted, thanks all involved, please forgive my naivety when it comes to motors, I am just afraid to touch something that I know absolutely nothing about...Now, give me a hot blonde, and I Got That Covered, lol

Update...the cart I mentioned now runs perfect with the new throttle cable, thats the cable running from pedal to gov...it was frayed and was hard to pull...
