Default 96 Club Car dies under acceleration

Hello, i'm new here. I recently purchased a 96 DS with an FE290 motor. Drove the thing home from about a quarter mile away. Everything seemed fine (I was warned about a bad battery). Sure enough, it died on me. I replaced the battery and it starts right up. Now for the problem.

When I try to accelerate, it kills the motor. When I let off of the pedal, it starts back up. I took the carb off and cleaned it, didn't seem to help. If I feather the pedal halfway or so a few times, it will start to go, but not long or consistently. I also smell a strong odor of gas, leading me to believe there is a fuel delivery problem. I pulled the hose off from the pump to carb and it pumps fine. There also does not appear to be anything blocking the fuel lines. Again, the cart will idle all day long. Any ideas? Thanks, Mike.

Well, honestly I am not sure.
But just asking did you check:
The spark plug?
Fuel filter?
Or maybe to see if the choke is getting stuck and it is choking out?
(Maybe the carts getting to much gas... Like idle is fine then you push the pedal it slowly floods.)

When you accelerate and actually kill the motor, is it hard to start after this happens?

Ok, went through the fuel system. I cleaned the carb again, replaced the filter and fuel line. Adjusted the carb to give less fuel (about 1 turn out). It started and ran well. Drove it around, went to adjust the carb some more and it died. Back to the same thing. My dad was helping me with the project, he said he believes it isn't getting spark continuously. He also said that when I put it into drive, it actually isn't running or idling until you actually accelerate.

So to re-cap, the fuel system is in good shape and is pumping appropriately. What's my next step?

They are designed not to go until you accelerate/hit the pedal. This helps to avoid rear ending the hapless old man in front of you in the golf course car park who is struggling with his hernia belt and takes ages to discover that he really is in a golf cart and not his armored Buick. Perfectly normal mate. It MIGHT sound like it's running but until you ease the pedal down the engine is just turning over waiting for the spark and fuel to get going.

Ok, gotcha, it's not actually idling then. So most likely spark then? The fuel is definitely pumping. Where should I start with trouble shooting a spark issue?

When the motor quits, pull the plug out. Put the wire back on and hold the spark plug against the body of the motor to ground it and push the gas pedal. You should see the plug sparking and hear it clicking.

Or u could hold a screwdriver in the wire and hold the metal "driver shaft" so you can feel it.

:D

lol. 20 thousand volts up your arm is an indicator for sure. Me ? I go for the inline checker Saves hundreds on doctor bills to re-set my pace maker which after the above test assumes I'm a Ferrari and not a box turtle.
