One day i will get around to modding mine like yours. After installing the plowmans jet kit, filter and airbox mods the fumes are worse.

The reason to go bigger is to reduce resistance to flow, that small engine isnt built to push that far for exhaust. We had a enclosed service truck where I worked and the boss wanted the welder and compressor at the front and the exhaust thru the floor, about 3ft by the time it was done,i told him it would do damage.Within a week the compressor was using oil and both smoked like crazy.

I've done exactly this for the same reason. It works well reducing the fumes, but I ended up drilling tiny holes in the 45 degree elbow and attaching it to the pipe by means of sheet metal screws. I couldn't locate a muffler-type clamp that small, so that was the next best thing. Originally, I had soldered the copper pipe extension into the elbow, but after a long run up a steep hill, the exhaust temperature got hot enough to melt the solder, so I ended up using screws on that piece as well.

I read your post about the melting so I just ran the cutter across two spots on each end to "crimp" it. Now that I have the tools I might experiment with a bigger pipe. Plowmans kit will be ordered soon.

The old farts in the villages in florida are using a high temp silicone elbow fitting with hose clamps to secure the pipe extension. I havent had luck finding anything that small and to with stand extreme high temps.
