Spark, fuel & compression but won't start
I have a 1990 Kawasaki club car. The car quit running. I have cleaned all the parts.....carburetor, fuel pump. when I turn the engine over it sounds like it is sucking air and has a slight backfire.
Generator & starter are the same unit. could that have anything to do with it not starting??? |

Re: Spark, fuel & compression but won't start
not if its turning over fast enough, have you pulled sparkplug to see if its wet after cranking a few seconds? if you have spark, compression, and fuel theres no reason cart shouldn,t run.............................

Did you do any recent work to it or was it running one day and just wouldn't start the next?

Re: Spark, fuel & compression but won't start
No prior working on it. I use it to run my dogs through tall grass & pasture. It started when taking foot off gas it would chug a couple time & some backfires instead of normal shut down. Then the got longer and a heavy backfire. nothing since then.
It was loaded with grass, dust, mud which I cleaned off the engine. replaced the spark plug & yes it does fire. 1 value is sticking & is off 1/8 inch. I put Seaform into the oil to loosen up the #2 lifter. So far it is still stuck. Would this cause it to not start?? Can't ut my finger on it but think it has something to do with that air sucking sound I mentioned? could it be a blown gasket? |

Just double checked myself & the spark plug IS wet. I can see & smell the gas. It sparks but won't fire.

Could have some water in the carb bowl. Drain the carb, I think the Kaws have a drain on the side bottom of the bowl.. Turn it over again and spray some carb cleaner in the intake while trying, see it it at least spits

check your exhaust make sure something didn,t get stuck and is plugging it up.......if plug is wet and its sparking that sucker should run even if it runs bad......you have checked compression with a gage right?......................

Re: Spark, fuel & compression but won't start
Right, if you say for a fact that it's sparking and there's fuel in the chamber then it should run. I would take the plug out, use some kind of clamp to ground the plug body, and turn the motor over for a couple seconds. The plug should start clicking and you should see it sparking.

Just for grins, if you have another plug, try it. I have had plugs in the past that would fire outside the cyl but would not under pressure..

Re: Spark, fuel & compression but won't start
Have you done a compression test to verify you have enough to fire the engine? You say you valve is hung open an 1/8"? A valve that is not fully seated will cause major running issues. Backfire through carb or exhaust, low or no compression. Your lifter sticking are you saying that its stuck in the bore and won't follow the cam lobe?
Do a compression test. And post your reading. Also make sure your battery is fully charged so you get good cranking speed for the compression test |
