Default G14 big end knock

We've this old G14 that blew its primary drive clutch. I removed the clutch and while waiting for the new one to arrive, gave it an oil change - doubt if had been done since Noah was a lad.

Now I've got everything back together the big end's knocking like a good-un. It's got little power and running hot.

I don't recall it knocking before I did the work, but it was very slow as it had one finger broken in the primary drive clutch.

I wonder if the oil in it before the change was so thick and treacly it was masking the knock.

I can't find any information about this engine. Does it have an oil pump, or is it splash lubrication?

Could I have done anything to cause the knock by changing the primary drive clutch?

I'd be grateful for any information or advice please.

I'm in the UK, so response times may be a little varied.

Now that's really useful. Looks like it's an engine out job to replace the big end as the crankcase is split vertically.

Many thanks.

You need a primary clutch puller. The G14 has rod bearings unlike the later engines.

An "engine out" job for sure. But no worries, its a half hour job to pull the motor. Hardest part is lifting it out without throwing out the back or scratching up the fancy paintjob, thats where its good to enlist 5 minutes of help from a friend.
