1993 Club Car Fairway Villager, What voltage?
Hello,
I recently purchased a 1993 Club Car fairway Villager. It did not have batteries, and the owner told me it was a 48V. I cannot find a way to tell if this cart was a 36 or a 48V. Most suggestions are just to count the holes on top of the batteries, which it didn't have. The seller provided a picture and the batteries in the picture are 6x8V to equal 48. Now I bought brand new Trojan batteries, 6x8V for the cart. Used his picture and wired them. Connected the charger which seemed to charge, but the Ammeter never moved. The charger cut off automatically, and I assumed I had the setup correct. Flash forward....The cart starting getting slower and slower after each charge even though we tried to only take short trips and return it to charge, as I had read this was a proper way to break in the new batteries. Eventually the cart wouldn't even go around the block so I am assuming the charger is bad? Well I looked on this Forum and found directions on how to repair the charger, and guess what? It says 36Volts on the side! AAAAAARRRRGH! So now I have a 36 volt charger that may or may not work and a cart that may or may not be a 48Volt. Please Help! Thank you, Jason |

Are you sure the red wire from charge port is hooked to the main pos. Battery. Lots of times the wire gets dropped down under the battery.

Yes it is hooked up. From what I am reading this is a 36v cart. Not 48. It runs though? Will a 36v cart run on 48v batteries?

If you buy a 48 volt charger - the batteries may recover a bit and survive, but the increased voltage will fry the 36 volt drive system. You have a dilemma - either pay to change your drive system to 48v solid state - or buy the correct 6 volt batteries and start over. Just to be sure, though - post your serial number in case it's not a '93. Also is the charging receptacle on the cart body round or rectangular? |

Hi thank you both for helping.
The charging receptacle is rectangular. I think they call it a crows foot. |

Yep - your kinda stuck, alright. On the positive side, you would get a big performance boost by converting to 48v (33% more speed plus added torque) with a 48v conversion kit thru Scotty at http://www.cartsunlimited.net/ - but not without the added cost of the kit, plus a 48v charger.
But its important to ensure that you haven't already severely damaged those batteries - how long have you been undercharging them? |

I don't think I have charged them at all. I am fairly sure the charger is not working. I only used the Cart for about a week. The ammeter doesn't move at all when plugged up. It does hum and shut off but no reading and no "click" I have seen others speak of.
