Battery Rebuild
Has anyone had the experience or heads up on rebuilding your batteries?
I have a nice set of Trojans and would like to see if I could breathe some life in to them. Below is the link to an Ebay listing on this process: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Repai...spagenameZWDVW Thanks, |

Re: Battery Rebuild
Some info on the web,
I researched desulphation for several years, including building several pulse desulphation units of various designs. Some were of my own design and used a very high-amperage, yet extremely short-duration short-circuit. (Some call this de-mossing.) You can buy these commercially - search around. Wiz-bang makes one that works, Courtiestown (a UK company) makes them, etc... I have a charger by Power-On-Board (Vector Products) that has a desulphation mode too, but I can't vouch for its effectiveness as I never tested it. Bottom line, my research showed that some batteries can be desulphated and returned to service, where they will live reasonably long lives. Others, especially those with shorted cells, will never recover. You can try putting EDTA in the cells and sometimes this will work too. Dissolve the EDTA in water and add the solution to the cells. Again, if the cells are shorted, this won't help. The best way to cure sulphation is to NOT let them get sulphated in the first place! Automatic trickle chargers are your friend. |

Re: Battery Rebuild
I don't have any experiance with electronic desulphators but have read about them and if done properly they seem to work. I do however have experiance with a chemical desulphator and can say it does work. When I say "work" I don't mean you will end up with a "good as new" battery or it will work on all batteries but it worked for me. One of our vendors gave us a bottle of Minn kota Battery Equalizer. We thought it was snake oil of coarse until one day I tried it in a dead battery. This battery had no juice what so ever and the plates were completly sulphated. I tried it just to see what it would do if anything at all.....well...that was about 9 months or so and its still starting my powerstroke diesel pickup today. I KNOW it's not "good as new" but when your in a bind it fits the bill just right. My next test will be to mix it with gallon jugs of distilled water.
The main ingrediant is Cadmium Sulphate and should be noted that it is highly toxic. Cadminum sulphate is used to break down lead sulphides that form on the plates. So is magnesium sulfate, which we more commonly know as Epsom salts. P.S. I have read Trojan Battery builds batteries for Minn Kota. |

Re: Battery Rebuild
Well,I just found out that my work has built this pulse desulphation kit for use on a project so I will test it out and let you know how it works. I think that if it works with addition to the snake oil...lol then we could restore some batteries which will be a savings! Worth a try.
