Microswitch
On a 1991 EZGO Marathon electric, is it possible that on the F&R switch I use
1- 2Post Micro switch and 1- 3Post micro switch together to make it run? Also when I test my 2 Post micro switch with the multimeter it clicks and tests good continuity. When I test my 3 Post I get no continuity with the tester but it clicks. This is the second 3 Terminal Micro Switch that this has happened to me. Is this possible to do? How do I test the 3 terminal switch? Matt |

Re: Microswitch
Also the 3 prong tests with one test led in common and one in normally open. What is wrong here?

Re: Microswitch
Typically a three terminal microswitch has a common, a normally open (NO) and a normally closed (NC) terminal. If you try to test from the NO to the NC, nothing will happen. Place one lead on the common - should be labeled - and place the other lead on the NC and you should read continuity. Click the switch and it should now read open. Measure from the common to the NO and you should see the opposite.

Re: Microswitch
I get nothing on closed but good continuity on open?
But I will only be linking from Common to Common so does it Matter? Matt |

Re: Microswitch
I get nothing from common to closed on 2 different 3 terminal switches.

Re: Microswitch
My mistake. I was doing it wrong problem solved.
The black lead goes in common not the red. I don't see anything wrong with connecting a 3 terminal to a 2. What would you say? Thanks for the help, Matt |

Re: Microswitch
I'm not familiar with your buggy, but mine has 2 microswitches on the FNR, one that only makes when in reverse, and one that makes in forward and reverse, but not in neutral. As long as you use the correct terminals, I see no problems.
However, the two terminal micro needs to be the correct type. I can't remember whether they are NO or NC, but as long as they behave like described above, you should be fine. |

Ok. My 2 terminal has a common and normally closed.
Thanks, Matt |

Re: Microswitch
Matt - rather than answering your questions directly, let's do it this way.
The difference between a two terminal and three terminal microswitch is that one set of contacts (either the NC or NO) isn't installed. The spring that returns the wiper ("C" or Common contact) to the NC (Normally Closed) contact is an arched piece of Beryllium Copper (BeCu), but other type springs are used. No matter what spring arrangement is used, the return spring is the weakest mechanical part of a microswitch and typically the first to fail. The contact points are fairly small and will fail due to pitting (Arcing) and corrosion, but with proper electrical design, they'll out last the spring. The microswitches EZGO uses on F/R and Throttle assemblies typically use the NC contacts for "GO" and mechanically opens them for "NO-GO". That way, the cart is "NO-GO' when the little bitty weak spring fails instead of being a runaway half ton wheeled object. (Some of the carts built before the lawyers took over, like the one you've got, might have used different switch arrangements. ) |
