Re: JohnnieB's computer gave up the ghost.
I have a spare laptop. Want me to send it you? Do you have Wi-Fi?

What are we all going to do when it ALL goes down? Solar flare, meteor strike, end of the world? We are way too dependent on all this technology. I'll just start the long good bye now.

I might add a solid state boot drive after I get everything up and running, but no oversized tires. The "fun" part is going to be getting all the files on the new system, since the new motherboard doesn't have ports the old drives will plug into, so I'll have to install them in a computer with the old style ports, transfer the files to an external USB drive and then sneaker-net them over to the new system. |

Can't you just share a drive and transfer them via network?

Re: JohnnieB's computer gave up the ghost.
Hopefully. The sneaker-net is the backup plan, but with a 1TB external USB, it will only take two trips at the most since there is a total of 2.5TB storage on the dead computer and it is only about half used.
The docking station setup you have is interesting. I've never seen one like that, of course I've never looked for one either. What's the make/model it or something similar. I've got a ton of old drives and I might be able to use them for archival storage for pictures and similar large files. |

Thermaltake BlacX Duet ST0014U is the one I have. Had it for years. They also do USB3 now.
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...?EdpNo=5352947 I've always had multiple machines, and picked one to put the printers, scanner and HDs on. I simply told it to enable sharing. There wasn't anything to setup, as they were already all connected to the router. |
