Default Re: Workhorse vs MPT Series

I've worked on and currently own a TXT with a Vegas Carts engine kit with Predator 670, as well as a Workhorse 1200LX, lifted with a Robbin 350, I've reconstructed several, workhorses, workhorse MPTs and MPTs. MPT simply stands for "Multi-Purpose Truck". It was added to the Workhorse name, then EZGO dropped "Workhorse" and they became MPTs. There is a full write up out there on the interweb on the transition. Eventually, EZGO switched to the Kawasaki motor and the transaxle secondary clutch was swapped to the passenger side. I suspect this is where VC kit doesn't work. My experience is that shock brackets on the frame, the bed and seat supports, and bump stops varied through the years, but that the transaxle were interchangeable. As CP241 indicated, the cross bars where the seat bracket mounts can get in the way in unlifted carts as the old workhorse seats were a one piece unit that mounted to the front of the body at the seat well and used angle brackets to hold the seat back, where later models had a beefier cross bar and separate brackets to hold the seat back separate from the bottom seat. The frames as they relate to the VC engine carrier are the same. I've even taken a post 2008 Kawasaki cart, swapped transaxles and engine mounts and engine from an older MPT or Workhorse into it with no frame mods necessary. Your cart, based on the current photos has a lift kit on it. Note the empty shock mount hole on the bottom of the spring support bracket at the axle. The VC kit allows you to drop the motor at the front of the bracket. If it has the 350, then the VC kit should work without a problem. You may need to cut or move bump stops or use a taller lift for clearance at the top of the motor, but I'm not aware of anything that would keep it from bolting in.

The Predator 459cc 15.8hp engine seems nice, especially for $450 new

That depends on your end goal. IF you are going to run governed it is a great choice. BUT if you are going to run higher revs not a good idea as no billet rod exist at this time. For a building base the 460 wildcat from ECcarbs is a better choice as all the clone speed equipment fits it. They are about the same price.

think motor height might be the issue and clearance with being able to fully close the tilt bed on the MPT

From the top of the axle tube to the top of the frame (where the bed would sit flush) is right at 17 1/2

The Vanguard 16hp and 18hp are both the same height, being 17.24"

With any suspension travel and movement the top of the engine would hit the bottom on the bed

Even the Predator 459cc 15.8hp engine is listed as veing 18" tall

Kohler Command Pro 18hp is 17" tall

The big Predator 22hp is only 16.9" tall

Was measuring from the top of the axle tube right or wrong?

Does the VC cradle mount onto the bottom side of the axle?

I found this thread, looks like a very simple design using the rear axle engine mount

In the second thread, the engine mount is bolted directly to the frame....no good! The engine mount needs to have a pitot point on the front where it bolts to the frame. That allows the rear suspension/engine cradle to move freely. Make sure you look at that in your design.

Yes for sure, that direct hard mount wouldn't work
