Oil in the air cleaner and backfiring
I am working on a Workhorse with a Robin 4 cycle engine. Around a 2007 or so. The engine starts hard and backfires then when you throttle up it backfires through the carb and the exhaust. There is also lots of oil in the air filter at the carb intake. I checked the timing belt and it looks ok and the tension is good. Spark plugs are of course black and oily. Compression seems ok. When I was checking the cam and rockers there were little puffs of vapor coming up through the oil drain holes when I turned it over by hand.
I am thinking the oil rings are broken or just worn out and possible compression rings as well. This cart is in rough shape for it's age. Not cared for very well. Any other knowledge is welcome. |

Did you check to make sure the timing marks lined up when you checked the belt? Get a compression tester and test each cylinder, it will give you a better idea of the state the rings are in.

Re: Oil in the air cleaner and backfiring
Hi Dodge If it were me I would check the valves, they will cause the problem you are having also oil in the filter can be caused by to much oil, If the cart is lifted you can't go by the full mark on the dip stick

Well, I was way wrong on the year. It's a 99 Workhorse. Makes way more sense as to the rough condition. My feeling, it will cost way more to repair than it's worth.

Where are you located? I may be interested in taking it off your hands.

Ahhh... Yeah thats a bit far from Dallas!
Personally, I would look into a big block conversion kit. I have read good things about the Vegas carts 440 kit. |

Re: Oil in the air cleaner and backfiring
The valves have been adjusted with no difference in the way it runs.
Today I had it running in the shop on jack stands and at full throttle it was backfiring out the intake and exhaust then the oil started blowing out the crankcase vent tube into the air box. |
