1991 ClubCar Carry All II Sputters and backfires

Does the 1991 Carry All II have a rev limiter? It sputters and backfires especially at high rpm. It may have been rebuilt. Not sure. Some times it runs fairly well but still backfires but other times it backfires and no power. Cleaned carb, checked fuel pump, cleaned fuel pump screen. Seems to have constant spark. 90psi compression. Fuel adjustment seems to have little to no effect. Could it be the exciter? Is there an air gap on exciter? I am hoping the timing is not off a mark. Coil seems to be fine.

Bad gas maybe? Running too lean? Bumping up against the rev limiter? Hard to say.

Went back to the basics and would have never guessed it looking through the spark tester. It was a bad plug wire. Took an old plug wire from the 44 ford tractor and installed it and the sputtering and backfiring went away. Put the original on and it started backfiring and sputtering. The plug wire did not have any breakes or craks. It must have broken down inside. It never hurts to start from the beginning. LOL!
