Re: Best way to take off / put on generator belt
There are two bolts (you can see one in your pic under the pulley) that the S/G pivots on and a tension adjuster between the S/G and engine that holds it in place.
You need to put cart in neutral, roll the drive belt off of the back or driven clutch to remove it from the drive or front clutch, loosen the two S/G pivot bolts and tension bolt, slide the S/G back and remove/replace the belt. |

Re: Best way to take off / put on generator belt
Neutral is halfway b/w foward and reverse. Just center the handle, slip the drive belt off, loosen the lock nut and back off the adjusting nut. You should be able to roll the starter backwards without loosening the s/g bolt with the help of a prybar or long handled flathead screwdriver. Take belt off, put belt on, tighten nuts on s/g and tighten lock nut. Put your drive belt back on and your done.

You could do that, I'm just kinda partial to doing things the correct way, less things tend to break that way.
I'm not saying right or wrong way. |

Re: Best way to take off / put on generator belt
Not second guessing any method you have crash... Just sayin' that I have never had to loosen that bolt. I was not leaning this post toward any type of incorrect method nor would I ever. I back the tension nut off and the starter rolls foward with a little common sense leverage and some pulling staight up on the belt to help roll the s/g up. I have fixed more than one ground issue right there on that bolt b/c it didn't get tightened back up. I would more than likely forget myself. Anyway, thanks for keeping me staight crash. I guess I should have been a little more informative on my response so no offense would be taken. Sorry if I stepped on a toe. No harm intended.

Guys, thanks for the advice. One final clarification - how much tension on the new belt - how do you know if your too tight?
Thanks! Ezrider |

Re: Best way to take off / put on generator belt
My 86 says that 10 pounds of pressure should deflect the belt 1 inch. That sounds like a good rule of thumb. You really don't want it too tight as you will put undue strain on the bearings. Too loose and it will slip. A classic sign of a loose belt is on a damp morning the belt will squeal as you crank the engine, until the moisture burns off.
