Default G1 brakes not working. please help!!!

Just got a g1 and im not at all familiar with the brakes on it. They don't slow the cart at all and when I push brake pedal it goes straight to the floor without any resistance. Anyone tell me what the problem might be?

I'm in the same boat. Just got an 81 G1. Runs ok, but doesn't even try to stop when brakes applied.

Where's the best place to get new brakes?
Does it matter if they are genuine Yamaha parts?
Is it easier/better to just switch to disc brakes?

Under the pedals is a part of the floor that can be removed. Removing it will give you access to the brake cables. The adjustment is right there.

Ditto! If that doesn't work, you need new brake shoes and/or drums. It is possible that there could be a problem with the cables.

G1 brakes had 2 different systems. 82 a later had self adjusting brakes. 81 and earlier brakes had adjusters on the back of the brake backing plates. If you adjust the brakes by the cable under the floor plate you are adjusting them wrong. First make sure the brake cables are good and the shoes and drums are good. Identify what year car you have. 81 and earlier can be easily adjusted. If you have an 82 and later you could have a problem.

Picked up a set of brakes, thanks again Smallblock.
Now, how do I get the axle out? Does it just come out with appropriate force?

No, and you dont need to remove them to do the brake shoes. If you really need to remove axles, remove the 4 bolts holding the backing plate and retaining ring. Then, appropriate force will remove them.

Glad I could help bottom_gun. CGtech, I sold him the G8 backing plate's/new shoes and drums off Wilson after the Ausco disc brake upgrade. Since there self adjusting (his is a old 1980 style), I suggested just to take out the axles and install the whole backing plate assy.
