Default 1996 g14----300 or 301cc ???

Ok... going to post this again in the right section. Was in the Electric Ezgo by mistake . Never got an answer if a thread can be moved if placed in a wrong section.

I am a little confused on the size motor in my cart . I am going to rebuild it and have been looking on different sites for rings and such . Some list it as a 300 and some list it as a 301 for my year and others just list for the year no size. I know in 1995 and 1996 there was a 300. I have read on here that somewhere on the block there is a marking with JN5 on it which would determine what it is . I have looked on mine but can't see any markings. Is it under one of the shrouds ? One other thing is there a difference in the bore for the two sizes as for getting standard size rings ? I would think so . I reworked the head with new valves ,springs, etc. I ordered the parts for a 96 g14 but the rings and bearings might be size specific . Gaskets might be the same for both tho. Just don't know . Would like to have the parts ordered or in hand when I pull the motor.

You mention your year as 1996. If it is in fact a 1996, I think you may have a G16 and not a G14. The G16 engine is 301 cc. You should do a little more research to determine what year/model you have. Good luck - RAY

FWIW - I checked the Yamaha parts list, found in the stickies, and they list different piston ring sets for the 96 G14 (JN5-11610-00-00) and the 96 G16 (JN6-11610-00-00). Different because the bores are different between the two engines. The 300cc bore is 75mm and the 301cc bore is 78mm. You definitely need to know which engine you have so you get the correct rings. Looks like rings for the 300cc engine are quite a bit higher in cost due to fairly small 300cc factory production run before changing to 301cc - Hope this helps - RAY

Bigstik my s/n is JN3211818 which I was told is a 1996 g14. I just can't find any markings on my block to be sure unless they are under a shroud. I guess the only way is to pull the motor before ordering parts but didn't want to do that. Was hoping someone knew exactly where the markings were.

G16 301cc air filter box is flat and sorta square. On my G16 and G22 engines there is a white tag on the air inlet shroud with engine info.

If your air filter is round and tall, I would say you've got the 300cc.

Dave it is tall and round. I will look again for something on the shrouds or block but you can't see much with them on there. Like I said before I had reworked the head and ordered parts for a g14 not saying if it is a 300 or not . Parts fit but the bore is going to be different between the two.

Ok here is some pics of my motor . I cleaned a flat spot on back of motor just in front of muffler thinking a number might be on that . No luck checking all over except under shrouds so don't know where the jn5 is suppose to be on the block.

I've got a G16 with the 301cc engine and your engine does not look at all like mine (not even close). I have a big round can muffler, yours looks oval. Your engine must be the 300cc. I think you'll be good with rings for a G14. Not sure where to find your engine ID but will let you know if I find out. - RAY

I double checked your serial number and you do indeed have a 1996 G14. That would make your engine a 300cc and you should be good to go with rings for a 1996 G14. Still no "joy" on engine number location, I give up, sorry. Good luck - RAY

Thanks for the info Ray and trying to find the location of the JN5 on the block . That really doesn't matter as long as I know for sure what I have . Guess when I pull it and clean the block up will find it if there .
