sudden loss of power
So i just got back for a ride in the mountains. The throttle got stuck wide open so i had to slow it down with the brakes and kill the power. About a minute late loose power amd she limped home. Remove air filter amd theres a lot of oil residue butit smells like gas. Good thw plugs just be fouled? I cant pull them right now as i dont have any tools. It doesnt smoke at all.

Re: sudden loss of power
Could be a valvetrain problem if rpm went way high, but if its not knocking a rod you should be happy. I don't know about your vanny (or what parts are in it) but in my experience pushrods and springs like to fail at high rpm sometimes valves. In that case you would lose a cylinder and that is half your motor.

Re: sudden loss of power
Rpm never went high as i was climbing the mountain. The motor starts right up with no smoke just has no balls. With the motor running i can see a mist coming from the crankcase vent.

Re: sudden loss of power
Ok. It runs like the chokes on but it aint. Oil level is fine amd it dont smoke at all. Sputters off idle and jist hardly moves. Is that a sign of a head gasket?

Re: sudden loss of power
That would be blow by, either its a head gasket leaking into the oil return or you lost your rings which would be really strange and it would smoke when you gassed it.

Re: sudden loss of power
It's also a sign on a bent push rod.

Re: sudden loss of power
You probably bent a rod and are running on 1 cylinder.
Easy diagnosis, pull each plug wire while its running. If the tone doesn't change when you pull 1 vs the other, there's your dead hole. |

Re: sudden loss of power
Ok checked the compression. one cylinder was 120-125 psi and other one was 60. Removed the valve cover and the set screw for the intake rocker arm was laying in there and the rod was too. Its not bent. Wonder how this could have happened? Forget what to set the lash at .006 or .008? Hopefully I can get it in and set with the motor in there.
