Default 1995 Medalist - testing without batteries

I had a 1995 medalist given to me. The batteries are old, dead, and won't take a charge. Before I invest in new batteries is there some way to test the cart to make sure it will run? Can I put three 12v car batteries in series and then connect it to the b- and b+ leads to see if it will run? Any advice will be appreciated.

Thanks so much for the reply... I assume I can also test the charger with the three batteries hooked up? Since I had no charge in the old batteries there was no way for the charger to kick on. Is there any other way to test the charger other than plugging it in with batteries hooked up?

You can just plug the charger in to test. Remember the charger needs to have at least 28v before it will come on.
