Default Club Car DS rear brakes

I have a 2000 club car DS. Recently replaced the batteries and I had it back up and running. Son was out driving it today and he heard something coming from the rear tires. I went out with him and I could hear it as well. We went out and test drove it to see if I could hear the noise and I didn't really hear it. Cart was running at a pretty good rate of speed, and the cart would not stop. Luckily we just ran it into the yard and coasted to a stop. I pulled it in the garage and lifted it up, pulled the brake drums and the break pads are toast. I wasn't planning on messing with it and wanted to put the brake drums back on, reinstall the tires and take it my mechanic. Well......I can't get the **** brake drums back on.

What the hell could possibly be causing this? As always, any help would be greatly appreciated.

The brake shoes are probably keeping the drums from going back on? If so, you will need to back off on the shoe adjusters to retract the brake shoes. Or remove the shoes to get the drums on.

I am not familiar with that model of cart but the hub/drums are likely splined to mate with the axles. Are you aligning them before trying to slip them back on?

Yes, the shoes look like they are preventing the drums from going back on.

I am not even sure how to align. Thank you for the response. All help is greatly appreciated.

Thank you for the responses. I replaced the pads and was eventually able to reinstall the drums. Tightened the brake cable and now it stops on a dime.
