2pg Low compression after rebuild
I have a 1980 EZGO Marathon, I have rebuild the engine new crank seals, bearings, new cylinder and piston and rings on my second set of rings and still low compression about 70 it does increase when i put oil in the cylinder to almost 100 so I guess its leaking past the rings, what am I doing wrong. There is a R on the rings and I have that facing up. I also checked the reed valves they seem to be good. It starts and runs good just no power. Thanks for the help.

Re: 2pg Low compression after rebuild
Did you hone the cylinders before you put the new rings back in?

What was the ring end gap?

Re: 2pg Low compression after rebuild
I did hone the cylinder but didn't check ring end gap, could it be that?

Re: 2pg Low compression after rebuild
Just covering all the bases. While unlikely, it's possible that they sent the wrong piston and cylinder combination. Did you for sure install the piston the right way?

Re: 2pg Low compression after rebuild
Did you stagger the piston rings? If the ring gaps line up it will drop the compression.
Check the gap, could have the wrong set of rings. Cylinder wear, could be out of round. A little rare on such a low compression/hp motor. If its been built and honed out before they can get a little sloppy. What about the heads, Gasket or valves could be the problem... |

Re: 2pg Low compression after rebuild
The piston ring grooves have tiny alignment pins. The rings will only go in one position.

Re: 2pg Low compression after rebuild
Have new rings on the way I guess Ill take the engine out one more time and see whats going on. Ill measure piston and bore and check end gap this time. I have used a new head gasket each time I opened it up.
