Default G22 will not start...please help!

Let me start by saying I'm not a mechanic but I can turn a wrench and decided to take this on as a project.
OK, so few months ago I picked up a 2006 G22 that wasnt running. Cleaned the carb, replaced the muffler and got it running but man was it smoking!
Just got it the bored .50 over and installed new piston and rings. I cleaned up everything and lapped the valves while I was waiting for the crankcase to get back from the machine shop. While taking it part, I marked the gears on the crankshaft, cam and balance shaft and lined them up when I put it back together. Now it will not start at all and it's blowing gas into the air filter.
Any suggestions on what I need to check? Thinking it may be timing but I'm certain I put it back in the same way it came out. Please help

Oh, forgot to add that it is getting fire.
Also, When i first installed the new piston and rings, I did not know which way to put the arrow on the piston so I went with UP, away from the valve.
When to start her up but would not start. I later saw a diagram on the web that had the arrow pointing down and thought that's what was wrong. SO, I took it apart, re-installed the piston with the arrow up.
Check ring gap, it is .010.
Checked valve clearance, both are at .012.
Put it all back together and it still wont start.
Sometimes sputters just a bit when I'm letting off the accelorator.
????
Scratching my head!

Are starter wires on correctly? Meaning, is the motor turning the correct direction?

Has it got compression?

Yes, it's turning over the right way and it's got about 110 lbs compression.
If i hold it a WOT when trying to start it's blowing gas in the air box. If i press on the accelorator just enough engage the starter, gas pours from overflow on carburetor.
I took it apart again last night and lined up the dots on the gears and the marks I etched lined up also so I don't think its timing.
Cleaned the carb again also thinking the float isnt sealing off but it didnt help.
What should I try next?
Thanks for you response.

Blowing gas into the air box makes me think its turning over backwards.

Compression should be over 165 #. Are you adjusting valves at TDC? (And I'm confused on this,) but valves should be adjusted to either .004 or .008. (Confused due to another thread I was involved with on late model carts.)

Have you observed rockers moving while turning it over? Meaning, push rods are in the lifters?

Well, I did not disconnect the wires on the starter motor when I pulled the motor, I unbolted it and tied it over to the side. I only removed the battery.
So when I put the battery back in I figure everything is the same and "should" be turning over the correct way.
Yes, adjusting at TDC but onoly had to adjust one. Huh, I thought i read on here somewhere that valve clearance should be .010 to .012 cold.
Yes I took the valve cover off and rocker arms are moving when it turns over.
I just cant understand why it wont fire off at least once...lol.
Thanks again.

You have a compression issue, and need to varify counter clockwise rotation.

Looking at the engine from drivers side (looking at the clutch), it rotates counter-clockwise when I try to start it. Is that correct?

Well, got her running.
Figured it had to be timing so I took it apart again and instead of lining up the camshaft with my mark and the painted dot, I lined it up with the hole in the camshaft gear. Indeed, that was the problem. Put it back together and its been running since!
So, correct timing on G22 is to line up the stamped dots on the crankshaft gears with the holes in the camshaft and balancer shaft.
I dont know what the stamped dot on the camshaft is for.
Cost me 3 quarts of Mobile1, a Saturday and some aggrevation but she's rolling! Time to by a lift kit and tires now!!!
